The real facts about sleep – and how to fix it.

Dr Melissa Ree

One in three Australian adults regularly struggle with their sleep, and 10-15% have the condition Insomnia. There is a strong link between chronic poor sleep and difficulties with anxiety and mood, work productivity, and health. Thankfully, insomnia is usually treatable, without medication.

This talk provides an overview of ‘normal’ sleep and dispels some of the most common sleep myths.  You will also be introduced to some of the recommended first-line treatment strategies for this common condition.

Dr Melissa Ree has strong interest and expertise in field of adult behavioural sleep medicine. Following her Clinical Psychology training and Ph.D. Dr Melissa Ree worked at the University of Oxford as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. During this time, she worked on a trial of Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Insomnia. Since returning to Perth she has continued to be active in treatment, training, and research into psychological aspects of insomnia and now is partner at Sleep Matters (in Subiaco), an insomnia management service in Perth, and senior lecturer at UWA.

Backbends and Bandhas – 9am Sunday  24th February

Have you ever had the experience of feeling LIGHT in your backbends? If not, we’ll share with you the key to activating the most expansive family of asana. In this 2 hour masterclass, we will unpack the 3 key bandhas: Moola Bandha, Udyana bandha and Jalandhara bandha (pelvic floor, navel + chin), how they transform our practice into feeling energising and light as well as utilising them while ‘in the flow’.

Join Amanda Noga, a Perth born and bred international yoga teacher for this special Sunday flow at Balanze in Claremont. The physical focus will begin with preparing the body for back-bending with core activation and then moving progressively deeper into backbends as we build strength and free up tension from the spine. We will close with forward bending counter-asana to restore balance.
